Introduction

Bibliographies, just as Jacquetta H. Burnet puts it, seem never to be complete. In rapidly expanding fields like China studies, there is always a new publication, and discovery of another reference that might be included. This bibliography is selective, and the criteria of selection depend largely on the preparation of my thesis writing. The references are concentrated on anthropological research on Chin, especially such areas as the development of the anthropological studies of China, regional studies, kinship and lineage, religion, social relationship, and ethnicity and ethnic relations.

The bibliography includes a great many references by the most famous western anthropologists such as Maurice Freedman, G. William Skinner, and James L. Watson, whose works have a great influence on the study of China. Of course, works of the Chinese anthropologists are also included, focusing on the more influential ones.
